Superintendent's Messages

Greetings from Superintendent Brady Smith
Dear Lopez Island School Community,
I am very excited to serve as your new Superintendent and look forward to working with students, families, staff, community partners and the broader Lopez Island community to ensure our wonderful school provides the very best education for all students.
To those who participated in the Superintendent search and interview process, and particularly to all of our School Board members, thank you for seeing in me the qualities that you believe will move the District forward.
And a special thank you to Acting Superintendent and K-12 Principal, Dr. Martha Martin, who not only took on additional responsibilities to allow for a thorough candidate search, but who also has been a great resource for me in preparing me for my new role.
I plan to send community emails and contribute to the weekly newsletters regularly to share both the many great things happening at school as well as the challenges we face. Speaking of challenges, you may know that the 2023-24 School Budget is an urgent issue and a top priority for me. I will be gathering information between now and our School Budget Community Town Hall on February 1st (rescheduled from January 11th). Expect more information and a form to submit your budgetary questions in the next couple of weeks. I look forward to seeking solutions with community and expert input.
And with the potential for snow this week, I am meeting with our Transportation and Facilities Directors to prepare. If there are any disruptions to the school schedule due to weather, I will announce through all of our communication channels!
Of the great things happening at school, I look forward to cheering on our Girls and Boys Basketball teams, enjoying delicious lunches in our cafeteria with students and staff, and meeting all of you who are engaged with and committed to the Lopez Island School District.
As a former English teacher, I love to read and talk about books so don't be surprised if I ask you what you are reading. I just finished "This Is How It Always Is" by Laurie Frankel and just started "The Remains of the Day" by Kazuo Ishiguro which has been on my list for many years!
Here is to a strong start to 2024 and a wish that the year brings peace to our world.
With gratitude,
Brady

Introducing our new superintendent, Brady Smith

Superintendent Brady Smith

For the past 18 years, Brady Smith has led four different public high schools in New York City as Principal (including serving as founding Principal in partnership with Outward Bound of a new small school in the Bronx) and is excited to return to the Pacific Northwest. A native Seattleite, Brady earned his Masters in the Art of Teaching (MAT) at Lewis and Clark College and taught for seven years in Portland, Oregon before heading east where he earned his School Leader certification at CUNY. He relocated to the family cabin here on Lopez Island in August and is excited to use his skills and experience with budget management, strengthening school systems and structures, and inclusive leadership approaches to serve the community as the LISD Superintendent.
